The Republican response when it’s pointed out that the bill moved through both houses of Congress without a single Democratic vote is that the opposite was true in the passage of the Affordable Care Act seven years ago at President Barack Obama’s behest. The prime difference is that the ACA was approved after extensive hearings and debate on its contents. Republican leaders in Congress pushed through the components of a tax plan that is overwhelmingly freighted to benefit large corporations and the wealthiest individuals without a single hearing, and through much of the process kept the contents secret from many of their own members. #GOPTaxScam

The nearly 100 PSC members at the CUNY Research Foundation’s (RF) central office are able to celebrate a solid new contract as the end of the year approaches. The bargaining unit ratified a five-year contract on November 10, a month and a half before its expiration date, with 2 percent minimum annual wage increases, as well as gains in other areas.

President Trump, with the help of House and Senate Republicans, is set to sign into law a historically unpopular tax bill that hits middle-class families with a tax increase and delivers 83 percent of the benefits to the top 1 percent. These lawmakers have declared whose side they’re on, but next fall we the people can take matters into our own hands and vote for a new Congress that will stand with the working and middle class. Read AFT President Randi Weingarten's full statement on the passage of the tax bill on AFT.org.

“Our SUNY and CUNY systems open the doors of opportunity for students and help make our state more economically competitive,” NYSUT said Tuesday. “We advocated for this ‘maintenance of effort’ legislation because we believe the state should pick up more of the mandatory costs of operating these exemplary institutions.” #DontVetoCUNY #MOE4CUNY

They held signs shaped like gravestones, signs with hand-written messages, each protesting the congressional Republican tax plan almost certain to pass in a matter of hours. Dozens of protesters gathered at the intersection of Wall and Broad streets on Tuesday, facing mild December weather and a perimeter of NYPD officers. A few attendees wore T-shirts representing the unions and community groups co-sponsoring the rally – some from the Professional Staff Congress at CUNY, some from District Council 37. #GOPTaxScam

Fifteen Protesters Arrested for Blocking Access to Stock Exchange while Demanding Congress Stop the Tax Give-Away to Corporations and the Rich Outside the New York Stock Exchange on today (Tues., Dec. 19), where the resources siphoned from the poor and middleclass by the Republican tax bill will be concentrated, 500 protesters filled the street chanting “Kill the Bill. Don’t Kill Us!” More than 60 lay down for a die-in. The die-in, organized by the PSC together with other unions, community groups and religious organizations, happened at the center of corporate profiteering on the day of the Congressional votes on the tax bill. It was organized in coordination with another protest in Washington D.C. Both actions pressed Congress to stop the tax give-away to corporations and the rich. #GOPTaxScam

Fifteen people chanting “kill the bill!” were arrested in front of the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday protesting the Trump administration’s proposed tax overhaul. “This bill is nothing more than a scam on the American people,” said Public Advocate Letitia "Tish" James, who was among about 200 people who joined the rally. “It’s the greatest theft in a very long time. All of us will suffer.” #GOPTaxScam

A new analysis by the Tax Policy Center shows that the revised GOP tax bill boosts inequality even more than previous iterations: By 2027, the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans will see a staggering 83 percent of the gains. So even though the final bill maintains some important provisions like the teacher tax credit, it's still a terrible bill for the middle class that rewards the wealthy and corporations at the expense of everyone else.

Today, Congress is preparing to vote on a $1.5 trillion tax plan that will benefit big corporations and the wealthiest Americans; that will result in cuts to programs and services that working families rely on; and that will radically increase the deficit. In short, Congress is planning to give us the worst holiday gift ever. Take action now at the NYSUT Member Action Center to tell members of Congress to vote NO on the GOP's outrageous tax boondoggle! #GOPTaxScam

The Republican tax bill can still be stopped! We in New York cannot be silent as Congress prepares to pass a bill that will devastate New York State and transfer trillions of dollars from the poor and the middle class to the richest tenth of one percent. Do not think that the revised form of the bill is acceptable or that passage of the bill is inevitable. Even in its revised form, the tax bill is a declaration of war on working people, communities of color, the elderly, the poor and the sick. We must stop it! On Tuesday, December 19, at noon, activists from labor unions and community and political organizations will take our demand to the heart of corporate finance, Wall Street. We will demonstrate against the tax bill and disrupt business as usual. Our message? Stop the tax giveaway to Wall Street and the rich! Tax the rich, not the poor! We need everyone. Make it a priority to be there. Sign up here to come, and let us know if you also want to participate in a peaceful action that risks arrest. A coalition of experienced progressive groups will provide training and support. Training for action that risks arrest at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday—details to follow The protest is being organized by progressive groups that have come together to take action in this emergency. Organizations working to make it happen include the Professional Staff Congress/CUNY, New York Communities for Change, the New York State Council of Churches, the New York State Nurses Association, the Working Families Party, People’s Climate Movement, Rutgers University AAUP/AFT, Hedge Clippers, Strong Economy for All, and others. We are working in coordination with protests this week in Washington D.C., and across New York State.
