Practice Makes Perfect!
Every summer, students lose as much as 2 ½ to 3 ½ months of what they learned the year before. Come September, teachers spend up to 6 weeks re-teaching the materials that students have forgotten. This “summer slide” disproportionately affects children living in low-income neighborhoods, and research has shown that ⅔ of the academic achievement gap can be attributed to unequal access to summer learning opportunities. The traditional summer school model only aims to serves students who are already failing, leaving behind the millions more that still need help. Consequently, students perceive summer school as a punishment, creating an environment where students are not excited to learn and rarely even show up. Simply put: it is broken.
Children in low-income communities lack the guidance and the academic opportunities that are available to most other students. In 2009 McKinsey & Co. reported that, “These educational gaps impose on the United States the economic equivalent of a permanent national recession.” One of our society’s greatest inequities lies in its inability to distribute resources fairly. Practice Makes Perfect is conceived on the belief that all children, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, have equal potential to compete intellectually in our nation.
Practice Makes Perfect is a full-service summer school operator. We drive student outcomes using an innovative near-peer mentoring model. Our program pairs skills development for younger students with leadership development, career training and college prep for older students. Through a unique multi-relational approach, PMP pairs elementary and middle school students with older, high achieving mentors from the same communities. Our students are taught by trained Teaching Fellows, then the entire program is placed under the supervision of a certified DOE teacher.
Practice Makes Perfect provides academic summer programming in high need communities.
