One of the most “exotic” recent waves of immigration to reach Israeli shores was that of the Ethiopian Jewish community, who arrived via hastily organized airlifts in 1984 (Operation Moses) and 1991 (Operation Solomon). Shortly thereafter, Shlomo Gronich organized a group of Ethiopian children into the Sheba Choir (named for the African queen whose visit to King Solomon is described in First Kings 10:2). They put out an eponymous album in 1991 that included several songs heavily influenced by the traditional music of Ethiopia, and with lyrics by Haim Idisis, a member of the community. The yearning of the Ethiopian Jews to return to the land of their ancestors (the Ethiopian Jews are said to be descendants of the tribe of Dan) is reflected in the first track on the album, Hasidah (The Stork). The stork is renowned for its ability to travel very long distances, and in this song the children, whose own travel to Israel was long delayed, urged the bird to fly to Jerusalem and bring back stories of the Holy City. Asalaamu Alaykum Community! Wednesdays Islamic Studies with Shaykh Alhayek resumes tonight from 7-9 pm. We will be decided on the next class series to study and earn a successful completion certificate from NHIEC. See you then!, inshaa'Allah.

My student Edwin demonstrating the Wing Chun Butterfly swords.

Please be sure to complete the 2018 GS Student Survey, which asks questions related to all facets of the experience as a GS student, will take approximately 20-25 minutes, and can be completed all at once or in stages.

Good luck with your finals. The building is open all day and night if you need to study, print something or just relax on a sofa to catch your breath. In other news, you don’t have to be a senior to come to commencement. We need volunteers to make the day special and we’ll feed you lunch, too. Have a great week! -

Congratulations, Columbia graduates! We wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors!

Public Lecture on Jodo and Shin Buddhism Sunday, February 25, from 2 to 4 pm New Takes on Pure Land Practice and Realization in Kamakura Japan The Kamakura period 1185 to 1333 was considered one of the most significant periods in Japanese history. It was the period of the samurai and the establishment of feudalism in Japan. Minamoto no Yoritomo was its founder and the first shōgun ruler. During the Kamakura period six new Buddhist schools were founded: Jōdo Shū by Hōnen, Jōdo Shinshū by Shinran, Rinzai Zen-Shu by Eisai, Sōtō Zen-Shu by Dogen, Nichiren-Shu by Nichiren, and Ji-Shū by Ippen. Please join us for Rev. Dr. Michael Conway’s talk focusing on Honen and Shinran. For ordinary people, this was a period of great hardship and suffering. Honen and Shinran introduced a new form of Buddhism that anyone could practice. Rev. Dr. Conway is currently a lecturer in the Shin Buddhist Studies Department at Otani University in Kyoto. He entered the Master’s program in Shin Buddhist Studies at Otani in 2003. He finished his Ph.D. at Otani in 2011 and became managing editor of The Eastern Buddhist, a journal founded by D. T. Suzuki and others in 1921. He served there until he took up his current post in 2015. He has spoken about Shin Buddhism in many different venues, particularly temples in Japan and the U.S. affiliated with the Shinshū Ōtani-ha (Higashi Honganji), but also at the Institute of Buddhist Studies Winter Symposium in February 2013, held as a part of the Buddhist Churches of America National Council Meeting. I hope you will be able to join us for our first lecture in 2018. Date: Sunday, February 25, 2018, from 2:00 pm Place: American Buddhist Study Center Library 331 Riverside Drive (between 105th Street and Riverside Drive) Seating is limited, so RSVP to [email protected] A donation of $5 from ABSC members and $10 for all others is requested.

Natasha Hastings will be our keynote speaker at the April 25th SBI GALA - will try to get a ticket link up ASAP.

New York City is currently a Winter Wonderland, so we're gonna bundle up and listen to the Waitress the Musical cast on repeat.

Going through 2017 was a breeze. We met lots of new faces every couple of weeks or days even, had our hearts attached to students who made every day enjoyable for all of us, and we got to bond with our team even more. We couldn't imagine a more heartfelt 2017. So cheers to another year!!! Hoping for another prosperous year 🎉🎊
