Slimming down usually means packing your diet with vegetables. Traditionally, it has been recommended we consume five portions a day. While fruit and vegetables are undoubtedly nutritious, some should be treated with caution. Sweet potato The vegetable contains nutrients such as beta-carotene, potassium, niacin, riboflavin and fibre, as well as vitamins A, B5 and B6. They are also fat-free, low in sodium and contain fewer calories than white potatoes. However, sweet potatoes are very high in carbohydrate for a vegetable, which brings up the calorie content. Eating them as fries also makes them particularly calorific. What's more, according to the Mayo Clinic, people who are susceptible to kidney stones may want to avoid them as they contain oxalate, which can contribute to kidney stones. Spinach It is famously a great source of iron, but the green leafy vegetable also contains lots of vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and folic acid. However, it also contains oxalic acid - or oxalates - which can interfere with the absorption of calcium. Cooking the vegetable will break the oxalic acid down. Additionally, if oxalates overaccumilate inside the body they can risk causing kidney stones. A major new report has been released showing that one in five deaths worldwide are caused by poor diet. The findings have been published as part of the Global Burden of Disease report. This is the most in depth study of global mortality rates ever conducted. Researchers have stated that it is down to the two extremes of malnutrition among poor people and unhealthy eating among the rich. They warn that the biggest factor is the lack of whole grains, fruit and vegetables in diets. The biggest driving factor is that millions of people are eating a diet that are high in: Saturated fats Red meats 'Empty' carbohydrates Junk Food And low in: Fresh fruits and vegetables Whole Grains Seafood Poultry Health effects have been linked to things such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, colorectal cancer and dementia. Researchers from the Victor Chang Institute in Sydney called it "a double breakthrough", as they found both a cause and a preventative solution. The researchers analysed the DNA of four families where the mothers had suffered multiple miscarriages or their babies were born with multiple birth defects, such as heart, kidney, vertebrae and cleft palate problems. They found mutations in two genes that caused the child to be deficient in a vital molecule known as Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), which allows cells to generate energy and organs to develop normally. It is worth noting that the doses of Vitamin B3 used in this research were 10 times the recommended daily doses for supplementation in women.
