@Acorn Training 2017-04-12

On the 5th of March 2017, Acorn conducted a Parent’s Workshop with more than a dozen parents and children entitled, Motivating Your Child. Using the Reiss Motivational Profile as a base tool for parents to better understand how and why their children act the way they do. The research basically centres on the needs and desires on a human being and how these then drive each person’s thoughts, motives and actions. Analysing the specific profile of each child allowed both trainers and parents to gain better insight into the reason behind their academic results as well as the way they relate to their siblings at home. Though not definitive, the profile gave us clues into each child’s personality as well as behaviour. Parents were first given as overview of the 16 basic human desires developed by Reiss’ and after which they were sub-divided into smaller groups for a more personalised question and answer session. Concerns about how to encourage a hyperactive child to read or how to build up the confidence of a child with low self-esteem and so on were discussed. Authentic sharing and brainstorming for ideas with trainers and like-minded parents made the session a very valuable one. Most parents agreed that the profile results was reflective of their child’s behaviour and they were more than eager to learn how to help their children learn better. Most heartening was the way many parents voiced more concern over building the character of their children over and above their performance in schools. Children, ranging from 5 years to 14 years of age, also attended this three hour long workshop but were placed in a separate programme. As they played games and did simple craft activities, moving from team-based to individual quiet work, trainers had the opportunity to witness them at work - these enabled trainers to get to know them better and thus provide better feedback that would align with the profile results. These observations were then later communicated to parents and both parties sought to find specific ways to motivate the different personality types. All in all, the workshop was well-received by both parent as well as children participants. Both gain insights into the different basic needs and how these could come into conflict or complement one another. Most importantly, it provided parent and child understanding of where and how one should apply their strengths and adjust their expectations to help the parent-child relationship further flourish.
